Gut Scribe is an IBS food and symptom diary built to be private by design. Your diary lives on your own device, encrypted, and you don't need an account to use it. This policy explains, in plain language, exactly what we do and don't do with your data.

The short version

Your diary is stored on your device and encrypted at rest.
You can use the app with no account and fully offline.
We never sell your data and we don't run ads.
Optional features (like reading a photo of a meal) send only what's needed to process your request - nothing is kept afterwards.
You can export or permanently delete everything at any time.

Who we are

Gut Scribe (“Gut Scribe”, “we”, “us”) provides a mobile application and this website that help people with IBS and other digestive conditions track meals, symptoms, and possible trigger foods.

What data the app handles

The information you choose to log is health data and we treat it as sensitive. It may include:

Meals and drinks (typed, spoken, or captured from a photo), plus timing and portions.
Symptoms and their severity, Bristol Stool Scale entries, mood, stress, sleep, and hydration.
Notes you write, and the patterns and “suspected trigger” insights the app derives from your own logs.
Basic app settings and preferences (for example, whether Comfort Mode is on).

By default, all of the above is stored locally on your device in an encrypted database and is protected by a key held in your device's secure keychain/keystore. We cannot read it.

Optional features that use processing

Some conveniences need a one-off processing step. When you use them, only the specific content required is transmitted, used to fulfil your request, and then discarded - it is not stored on our servers or used to train models:

Photo & text meal parsing: if you snap or describe a meal, the image or text is sent to be converted into structured food items and returned to your device.
Voice logging: if you speak an entry, the audio or its transcript is processed into text and returned to you.
Explainable insights: pattern analysis runs on your device wherever possible; when a request is processed off-device, it is transient and anonymous.

These features are optional. You can log entirely by typing and tapping if you prefer never to send anything off your device.

What we don't do

We don't sell, rent, or trade your personal or health data - ever.
We don't show advertising and we don't use advertising trackers.
We don't require you to create an account or hand over your identity to use the core diary.
We don't use your diary content to build a profile of you.

Analytics & diagnostics

To keep the app stable we may collect limited, privacy-respecting diagnostics such as anonymous crash reports and aggregate usage counts (for example, “how many people opened the timeline this week”). These never include the contents of your diary. Where required, we ask for your consent first, and you can opt out in settings.

Legal bases & your rights

Depending on where you live (including under the GDPR and similar laws), you have rights to access, correct, export, and delete your data, and to withdraw consent. Because your diary is stored on your device, you already hold and control it directly - you can export a copy or erase everything from within the app at any time.

Data retention & deletion

Your diary is retained on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app. Deleting an entry or clearing your data removes it from the device. Any transient content sent for optional processing is not retained after your request completes.

Children

Gut Scribe is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Google Play Data safety

Our Google Play Data safety disclosures reflect this policy: health and fitness information is handled on the device, data is encrypted in transit for any optional processing, we do not sell data, and you can request deletion. If any practice changes, we will update both the store listing and this page.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes we will update the date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
